Conferences

Every year, MAASU hosts two conferences. The fall conference, known as the Leadership Summit (LS) is catered to 150-200 students. The Spring Conference (SC) usually hosts over 800 attendees, and is where M-Reps will vote in a new Executive Coordinating Committee, decide on the upcoming conference locations and constitutional changes. Each conference brings to light the history, challenges, and initiatives the Asian Pacific Islander American community faces.

Request for Proposals for Spring Conference Workshops & Arts/Cultural Programs

The Midwest Asian American Student Union (MAASU) Spring Conference Planning Committee is pleased to announce its Request for Proposals (RFP) for workshops and cultural activities for the MAASU Spring Conference which will be on April 15-16, 2016 at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. The theme for the 2016 spring conference is “From (His)tory to Your Story: Generation A.”

2016 CONFERENCE THEME: "From (His)tory to Your Story: Generation A"

We are at the pivotal point in the creation of a “New America” when the population of communities of color continues to rise marking us as the new majority. Specifically, the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community has grown to become the fastest growing racial group in the country, and the histories of the AAPI community demonstrate the immeasurable contributions of our people to the mainstream American history. Despite this the important stories of our AAPI history are still often ignored contributing to a growing lack of AAPI identity across the Midwest.

Throughout the Midwest AAPI students are still facing discrimination, the story of undocumented APIs are still largely invisible, the spaces for LGBT AAPIs remain limited, the voices of our AAPI sisters are continually silenced, and the "PI" in AAPI continue to be forgotten The time is now for AAPI collegiate students, artists, activists, and allies to come together to tackle the challenges that our community faces.  We must continue to fight, and the MAASU Spring Conference is an exciting opportunity to engage in lively, uncomfortable discussions, debates, and dialogues around the Midwest AAPI experience.

As a community we have to acknowledge the historical struggles of past generations, we have to understand the ways in which our current generations have been influenced by them, and we have to build for future generations through stories and spaces created for us and by us. We call this future generation Generation A. We must continue to fight, and the MAASU Spring Conference is an exciting opportunity to engage in lively, uncomfortable discussions, debates, and dialogues around the Midwest AAPI experience!
